What is a Half PAd?

Horse half pads are used to provide additional cushioning and offer support between the horse’s spine and saddle whilst riding. Unlike a saddle cloth, which covers the entire area under the saddle, half pads are smaller and typically cover only the area under the saddle panels. They are typically used in conjunction with a regular saddle pad underneath but some are suitable to be used alone.

Specialist half pads include rear and front risers, some with adjustable panels for a custom fit. They can be manufactured from various materials including sheepskin, gel-eze, and memory foam with each material offering different benefits.

At Ayr Equestrian we stock many styles of half pads for your horse in a range of sizes and colours including brown, grey, pink and navy ensuring your half pad is functional and stylish.

Benefits of a horse half pad

Half pads help to absorb shock and impact during riding. They can also help to distribute a rider’s weight more evenly across the horses back reducing pressure points.

Some half pads can be used to adjust the fit of a saddle, filling in gaps to provide a more customised fit. Gel pads are particularly useful for keeping the saddle in place. The gel reduces the risk of saddles slipping and sliding enhancing stability for both horse and rider.

By providing a soft barrier between the saddle and the ponies back, half pads can help prevent chafing and sores, especially in those with thin skin or clipped coats. Likewise, riders often find a well cushioned half pad provides a more comfortable ride.

Half pads come in a various styles, such as gel, memory foam, sheepskin and wool. This allows you to choose the best option for the needs of your horse. They are suitable for use in various disciplines and can feature advanced technologies and materials including breathable fabrics and anatomically shaped designs.

Traditional Half Pads

Our stock of traditional half pad tends to be manufactured from sheepskin, wool, or fleece. These materials provide excellent cushioning, natural moisture-wicking properties, and breathability. An additional advantage offered is good shock absorption and over time they will conform to the shape of the horse's back and saddle.

Thick, soft material enhances your horse's comfort whilst under saddle. Used in winter they can provide additional warmth without bulk or weight. Traditional pads are cut high at the front to ensure no pressure is placed on the wither and movement is unrestricted.

Be creative and mix and match your colour palette when teaming your half pad and saddlecloth - olive and brown, emerald and grey, even black and yellow! Available in size - pony, cob and horse.

Sheepskin and wool half pads require specific care to maintain their properties and longevity. Although the majority are washable, note the manufacturers care instructions before doing so. Brands include Arma and Le Mieux.

Gel-Eze Pads

Purchase a gel-eze pad to enhance stability and reduce slipping. The lightweight non slip surface ensures the saddle remains securely in place improving rider balance and control. The thin gel-eze material absorbs shock and reduces the pressure on a horse’s back, particularly beneficial when jumping.

The non slip pad is suitable for a wide range of equestrian disciplines, including dressage jumping and eventing. It can be used with a variety of saddles and saddle pads, and it suitable for use under or over a regular saddle pad.

Our stock of high-quality gel pads are durable and can withstand regular use. Gel-eze pads are easy to clean with a simple wipe down or wash in warm soapy water. Try the Gel Eze non slip saddle pad competitively priced at £26.75.

Corrective Pads

A corrective gel rear riser is placed under the saddle to provide additional lift and support to the horses back. They are commonly used to address issues related to saddle fit, horse conformation and rider’s balance. Rear gel risers help adjust the angle and fit of the saddle, ensuring it sits correctly on the horse’s back. By adjusting saddle balance, risers can help improve the riders position and overall effectiveness.

The function of Front risers is to lift the front of the saddle reducing pressure on the horses shoulder and wither. Horses with a low wither or a downhill build can benefit from front risers to achieve a more balanced saddle. Generally available in one size and fully washable.

The LeMieux Pro Sorb 3 Pocket Half Pad features quilted shim pockets and is sold with 2 sets of 5mm foam shims for precise custom fit adjustment. This breathable horse half pad has a cut back shape at the front to allow for clearance over the withers whilst a silicone print ensures a secure fit.
